Adding chords to a melody from music in dreams is not as daunting a task as it may seem. As a beginner, you can easily learn the basics of harmonizing a melody. Here are a few tips to get you started.

     1.     Familiarize yourself with the key of the melody. Knowing the key of the melody is important in order to know which chords to use.  The key of a melody is determined by the tonic note, or the root note of the melody. This can be determined by looking at the pattern of notes common in the melody, and then comparing them to the notes of a particular scale. Additionally, the key of a melody can be determined by analyzing the melody of its tonality.

     2.     Add chords utilizing the circle of fifths, which is a visual illustration of the relationship between the 12 notes of the chromatic scale, to help comprehend the connections between chords and keys which can be used to harmonize with the melody. By making use of the circle of fifths, you can construct a chord progression for your melody by linking the various chords that are associated with each other by fifths.  Chords are just groups of notes that are played together. A chord progression is an arrangement of chords that is played in a specific order which I usually based it on the circle of fifths — there are both free and paid apps that you can download for the Circle of Fifths.  This is important because chord progressions form the backbone for a melody.  Once you know the key of the melody, you can choose the chords that fit the melody using the circle of fifths.

3. Understand the concept of chord substitution. Chord substitution is the process of replacing one chord in a progression with another chord. This can be done to add more interest to the progression and to create a more complex sound.

4. Practice playing the chords in the melody. Once you’ve chosen the chords for the melody, it’s time to practice playing them. Start by playing the chords one at a time and then gradually add more chords to the melody.
